Writing Letters to God

“Pour out your heart like water in the presence of the Lord.” – Lamentations 2:19 (NIV

Devotional Message-Day 18

Sometimes, the deepest prayers aren’t spoken—they’re written.

There’s something powerful about putting pen to paper and pouring out your heart to God like a letter to a trusted friend. It slows you down. It helps you say what you didn’t even realize you were feeling.

Letter-writing prayer can be a way to:

  • Unburden your emotions

  • Confess honestly

  • Ask boldly

  • Remember His faithfulness

David’s psalms were just that—written cries, confessions, and declarations. Some of them were raw. Some poetic. Some messy.
All of them were real.

When you write to God, you’re not writing for grammar or structure. You’re writing for connection.

So write it angry. Write it joyful. Write it afraid.
Write it like you believe He’s listening—because He is.

And maybe, just maybe, you’ll find that your written prayer becomes a record of His faithfulness in the seasons to come.

Reflection Prompt

Have you ever written a letter to God? What do you think might happen if you were completely honest in writing?

Prayer

God, I have so many things on my heart—some I haven’t even been able to say out loud. Help me write it out honestly, trusting that You meet me even in my scribbles. Thank You for listening, even when my words feel unworthy. Amen.

Closer Still – Action Step

Today, write a letter to God in your journal. Be raw, honest, grateful, angry, curious—whatever is real. Then read it back as a prayer and let Him meet you there.
