"I don't feel God right now." Sound familiar? Some days we wake up filled with faith. Other days, we feel numb, anxious, overwhelmed, or spiritually distant — and it's tempting to let that feeling become our truth. But our faith was never meant to rest on how we feel in the moment. It rests on God's character, which doesn't shift with our emotions. Here are three ways to anchor your trust in God, even when your feelings are all over the place.
"Our faith isn't based on feelings — it's based on God's character."
God created emotions — they're part of how we process life. But they were never meant to lead us. Jeremiah 17:9 reminds us that the heart itself is deceitful above all things — which means feelings can be real and still not be trustworthy narrators of what's actually true. Feelings fluctuate. Truth doesn't. You can acknowledge what you feel without giving it the final word:
- When anxiety says "you're alone" — God says "I will never leave you"
- When fear says "it's falling apart" — God says "I'm holding it all together"
- When shame says "you've gone too far" — God says "there is no condemnation"
- When despair says "nothing will change" — God says "I am making all things new"
Sometimes, trusting God looks like worshiping through worry. It's reading the Word when you'd rather scroll. It's choosing to believe His promises even when your emotions push back. Second Corinthians 5:7 says we walk by faith, not by sight — and that includes the sight of our own feelings. You may not feel strong, but your obedience is what builds spiritual strength.
- Choose one true thing from Scripture to stand on today
- Worship even when you don't feel like it
- Obey the next right step, regardless of your mood
- Let your actions lead your emotions, not the other way around
"Faith isn't about always feeling God — it's about choosing to believe He's still there."
Your emotions are not the litmus test for God's presence. Psalm 34:18 promises that the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit — near, whether or not you feel it in the moment. Still faithful. Still working. Even in the silence. It's okay to feel deeply — Jesus did too. But don't let your emotions dictate your direction.
- Remember a past season when God was faithful, even if you didn't feel it then
- Speak His nearness out loud when you feel distant
- Let silence be a place to wait, not a reason to doubt
- Trust His presence is a fact, not a feeling
A Simple Prayer
Lord, some days my emotions overwhelm me.
They lie. They shout. They shift constantly. But You never change.
Help me build my life on truth — not on how I feel. Lead me by faith. Anchor me in Your Word. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Reflect on This
- When was a time you had to trust God in spite of how you felt? What did choosing faith over feeling look like in that moment?
- What truth from Scripture helps ground you when your emotions get heavy — and could you keep it somewhere visible this week?
