💭 Commentary
The word "boldness" is the one that should catch your attention first. Not timidity. Not hesitation. Not the careful, apologetic approach of someone who isn't sure they're welcome. Boldness. The writer of Hebrews is describing an access to God that is confident, direct, and unashamed — and the reason that kind of boldness is appropriate isn't because of anything we bring to the throne, but because of what the throne itself is. It's not a throne of judgment you're approaching. It's a throne of grace. The very place you're being invited to come is defined by the thing you need most.
What you find when you get there is mercy and grace — two distinct gifts that together cover everything. Mercy is not getting what you deserve. Grace is getting what you don't deserve. Between those two things, every human need is addressed. The failures you're carrying, the weakness you can't seem to overcome, the situation that feels completely beyond you — mercy says God won't hold it against you, and grace says He will actively help you through it. You don't come to the throne to make a case for yourself. You come because He has already made the case for you, and the verdict is mercy and grace.
Then the writer adds the timing: in time of need. Not after you've waited long enough to feel worthy. Not once you've cleaned things up sufficiently. In the time of need — right in the middle of it, at the moment when you need it most. God isn't asking you to wait until the crisis passes to come to Him. He's inviting you into His presence precisely when things are hardest, most urgent, and most overwhelming. Draw near today. Whatever you're carrying right now is exactly the kind of thing this throne exists for.
🤔 Reflection Questions
- 💭 Do you approach God with boldness or with hesitation? What is it that makes you hold back — and how does knowing it's a throne of grace change that?
- 💭 Where in your life right now do you need mercy — not getting what you deserve — and where do you need grace — getting what you don't deserve? Have you brought both to God?
- 💭 Are you waiting until you feel worthy enough to approach God, or are you coming to Him in your time of need exactly as this verse invites you to? What would drawing near boldly look like for you today?
🙏 Prayer
"Lord, I am drawing near today — not because I have it together but because You have made a way for me to come boldly to Your throne. I need mercy for what I've done and grace for what I'm facing. I receive both today with open hands and a grateful heart. Thank You that I don't have to wait until I'm worthy or until the crisis passes. You are inviting me in right now, right in the middle of my need. I am here. Meet me here. Amen."
