Notice the verse doesn't say God works in some things. It doesn't say He works in the comfortable things or the convenient things or the things that make sense. It says all things. Every single thing โ including the unfair ones, the painful ones, the ones you never saw coming.
That's either the most comforting promise in all of Scripture or the hardest one to believe when you're in the middle of something that feels completely wrong.
I've been in both places. And I can tell you from experience โ it's true either way.
All Things โ Even The Unfair Ones
We tend to read Romans 8:28 on good days. We put it on coffee mugs and wall art and quote it when things work out.
But Paul wrote this letter from a place of suffering. He wasn't writing about how God works things out when life is comfortable. He was writing about how God works in chains, in persecution, in situations that looked completely hopeless from the outside.
All things. That includes the unfair performance review. The false accusation. The person who tried to tear down what you built. The situation where someone had power over you and chose to misuse it.
God was already working in that too.
God doesn't just work things out after the fact. He's working IN the situation โ before you even walk into the room.
The Day God Prepared Me For a Meeting I Didn't Know Was Coming
I once had a supervisor who was what people kindly call a micromanager. She loved to be involved in everything โ and when it came time for my performance evaluation she came in with a list of negative things that were completely fabricated.
I respectfully told her โ you don't wait until the day of evaluation to tell a person everything they did wrong. If those were legitimate concerns they should have been raised during the performance period so I had the opportunity to correct them.
I didn't sign that evaluation.
We had to have a meeting with the supervisor above us both. And here's where God showed up in a way I didn't fully understand until later.
Before that meeting God had already led me to gather all my work โ every document, every piece of paperwork, every record of what I had actually accomplished. I didn't fully know why at the time. I just felt led to have it ready.
In that meeting I was able to counter every single fabricated claim with documented truth. The supervisor above us both started questioning her because her story wasn't adding up. It wasn't making sense to him either.
She ended up changing my performance rating to the higher number I deserved.
God had been working in that situation before I ever walked into that room. He knew what lies were coming. He knew what evidence I would need. He positioned the right person above her. He gave me the words to speak with calm and confidence instead of anger.
I really believe Romans 8:28 because He has worked things out for me more times than I can count. Not just in that meeting โ but in situation after situation where something that looked completely wrong ended up working out for my good.
He is always working. Even when you can't see it. Even before you walk into the room.
The Called According to His Purpose
The second half of this verse is just as important as the first.
Who have been called according to his purpose.
This promise isn't a blanket guarantee that everything will always work out for everyone in every situation. It's a specific promise to people who love God and are living according to His purpose for their lives.
That means the promise is activated by relationship. By love. By alignment with His purpose.
When you are walking with God โ genuinely trying to live according to His purpose โ you can trust that even the things that look wrong are being worked. Even the unfair evaluation. Even the false accusation. Even the closed door.
He is not surprised by any of it. He was already there before you arrived.
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."
What This Means For What You're Facing
Whatever situation you're in right now that feels unfair โ God is already working in it.
Whatever meeting you're dreading โ He's already in that room.
Whatever accusation has been made against you โ He already has the evidence ready.
Whatever injustice you're facing โ He already knows the outcome.
You don't have to fight in your own strength. You don't have to panic. You don't have to figure it all out before you walk in.
He was already there before you arrived. And He is working it for your good.
Lord I thank You that You are already working in every situation I face โ even the ones that feel completely wrong. I trust that You see what I can't see. You know what I don't know. You were in that room before I arrived. Help me walk into every hard situation with the confidence that You have already gone before me and You are working all things together for my good.Amen.
