Breaking Up with Performance
You started by grace. You continue the same way.

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. โ Colossians 2:6โ7 (NIV)
Performance Christianity is one of the most quietly exhausting things in spiritual life โ and most people don't even have a name for it. Here's what it looks like:
- You read your Bible because you'd feel guilty if you didn't โ not because you're hungry for it
- You answer "I'm blessed" at church because that's what people expect โ even when you're barely holding it together
- You serve because people are watching โ not because you're overflowing
- You pray the right words โ but you haven't been honest with God in months
Performance Christianity is exhausting because you're constantly managing an image. And deep down, you know the image doesn't match the reality.
But here's what Paul is saying in Colossians: you didn't start this way. You started by grace. By faith. By simply receiving what God offered โ with empty hands. Continue that way.
"Try harder, then God will be pleased with you."
Your source of life is Christ โ not your reputation, consistency, or public spiritual persona.
Overflowing with thankfulness doesn't look like a performance.
It looks like someone who genuinely knows
they've been given something they didn't deserve.
So what does it look like to break up with performance? It looks like being honest about where you are. Praying prayers that don't sound impressive. Admitting you don't have it figured out โ to God, and maybe even to a trusted person in your life.
It looks like receiving grace instead of earning approval.
Grace was always the invitation.
It still is.
Where in your spiritual life are you performing for others โ or even for yourself? What would it feel like to drop the performance and simply be honest with God today?
God, I'm tired of performing. I want to be real with You โ not the version of me I think You want to see, but the actual me. Rooted in You. Honest with You. Overflowing not from effort, but from genuine gratitude for what You've done. Thank You that grace was always enough. Amen.
Today, have one honest moment with God. No impressive words, no cleaned-up version of yourself. Just come as you are and receive what He's already given.
Grace was always the invitation. Receive it today.Let's Talk
