Perfect peace sounds like something that only exists on the other side of the hard thing. After the test is over. After the storm passes. After you finally make it through. But Isaiah 26:3 says something completely different — perfect peace exists in the middle of the hard thing. The condition isn't circumstances. It's where your mind is fixed.

That's a completely different kind of peace than the world offers.

The world's peace depends on everything settling down. God's perfect peace depends on one thing — a mind that is steadfast. Fixed. Immovable. Locked onto Him regardless of what's happening around it.

What Steadfast Actually Means

The Hebrew word behind "steadfast" here means to lean on, to support, to be propped up by. It's not just thinking about God occasionally. It's the posture of a mind that is actively leaning on Him — using Him as its support — through every step of something hard.

A steadfast mind doesn't drift to worst case scenarios. It doesn't rehearse every way things could go wrong. It doesn't give fear a seat at the table.

It stays fixed. On Him. On His faithfulness. On what He has already done and what He has promised to do.

And from that fixedness — that deliberate leaning — perfect peace flows.

Perfect peace isn't the absence of difficulty. It's what happens when your mind stays fixed on God in the middle of it.

Twelve Miles and a Steadfast Mind

My second duty station was Fort Campbell, Kentucky — known as the Air Assault School base. At the time I was stationed there if you were in my unit you were required to go through Air Assault School. They ask you. You say no. And then you are told when you have to attend.

My unit happened to be directly across the street from the school — go figure.

I was afraid of the physical demands and I didn't feel prepared. This is known as the Ten Toughest Days in the Army — a rigorous 10-day course where only about 45% of students pass. About 15% don't even make it through Day Zero.

I went through the course the first time. I passed everything. Every phase. Every test. And then came the final event — a 12-mile ruck march that had to be completed in under three hours.

I missed it by only a few minutes.

To say I was disappointed was an understatement. I had passed everything else. But the ruck march is the final gate — and I hadn't cleared it. I had to go back across the street and tell my unit. And then go back to repeat the one thing I failed — that 12-mile march.

But the second time I had a completely different mindset.

I knew what I was up against. I knew where I had fallen short. And I made a decision — I was going to keep my mind fixed on God through every single step of that 12-mile march.

I prayed. I sang. I talked to God the entire way through the march. Mile after mile. Step after step. Hill after hill. Because that road wasn't flat — it had hills. Every time I thought I was almost there another climb appeared. But my mind stayed fixed. When my body wanted to quit I kept leaning on Him. When the weight felt unbearable I kept my eyes on God instead of the next hill.

I made it to the end. I passed the course.

And I got to wear that Air Assault Badge proudly on my uniform.

The difference between the first time and the second time wasn't my physical ability. It was where my mind was. The first time — fear and doubt had too much space. The second time — God had it all. And from that fixed, steadfast mind came a peace that carried me 12 miles.

The Peace God Keeps

Notice the verse says God will keep you in perfect peace. Not give it to you once and leave you to maintain it. Keep you in it — actively, continuously, as long as your mind remains steadfast.

That means perfect peace is not something you manufacture. It's something God maintains in you when you stay fixed on Him.

Your job is the steadfastness. His job is the peace.

Whatever you're walking through right now — whatever feels like your 12-mile march — fix your mind on Him. Pray through it. Sing through it. Talk to Him through every mile. And let Him keep you in the peace that only He can give.

The badge on the other side is worth every step.

"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you."

Isaiah 26:3
✦ A Prayer for Today ✦

Lord I fix my mind on You today. Not on the fear. Not on the worst case scenario. Not on how hard this is. On You. Keep me in Your perfect peace as I lean on You through every step of what I'm facing. When my mind starts to drift bring it back to You. I trust You with every mile ahead of me.Amen.

Reflection
1
What is your "12-mile march" right now — the thing that feels physically, emotionally or spiritually exhausting — and what would it look like to keep your mind fixed on God through every step of it?
2
What's the difference between thinking about God occasionally and having a steadfast mind that actively leans on Him — and how does that distinction change the level of peace you experience in hard seasons?
