Today's Verse with Reflection & Application

Today's Scripture
"Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things!"
Psalm 98:1 (WEB)

💭 Commentary

A new song. Not the same one you've been singing for years out of habit. Not the familiar chorus you reach for automatically when you need to feel something spiritual. Something new — fresh, current, alive. The psalmist isn't dismissing the old songs. The history of what God has done is worth remembering and celebrating. But he's pointing to something that happens when you stop recycling yesterday's praise and start looking for what God is doing right now, in this season, in this moment of your life. A new song requires new eyes — eyes that are actively looking for evidence of His goodness today rather than coasting on what He did before.

The reason for the new song is immediate and specific: he has done marvelous things. Past tense, but the implications are present. Marvelous things — not ordinary things, not barely-adequate things, but things that make you stop and marvel. The question this verse quietly asks is whether you've been paying attention. Because God hasn't stopped doing marvelous things. The marvels haven't ceased — sometimes our awareness of them has. We get familiar with His faithfulness the same way we get familiar with anything we're around long enough, and familiarity has a way of making the extraordinary feel ordinary if we're not careful.

So today is an invitation to look again. Look at your life — not at what's missing or broken, but at what God has done, is doing, and hasn't stopped doing. There is something new to sing about. There is fresh evidence of His goodness sitting in your story right now if you're willing to find it. Sing it out. Not the rehearsed version, not the comfortable old standard — something new that comes from actually seeing what He's doing in your life today. He has done marvelous things. That's worth a brand new song.

🤔 Reflection Questions

  • 💭 When did you last find something genuinely new to praise God for — something fresh and specific to this season of your life rather than a recycled general thanksgiving?
  • 💭 Have you become so familiar with God's faithfulness that you've stopped marveling at it? What would it take to see it with fresh eyes today?
  • 💭 What marvelous thing has God done in your life recently that deserves a new song — something you haven't fully stopped to acknowledge and celebrate yet?

🙏 Prayer

"Lord, forgive me for singing the same old songs out of habit while missing the new things You are doing right in front of me. Open my eyes today to the marvelous things You are still doing — in my life, in the lives of people around me, in ways I haven't fully stopped to notice. Give me a new song. Not borrowed praise but something fresh that comes from actually seeing You at work today. You have not stopped doing marvelous things. Help me not to stop noticing. Amen."
