When You Feel Spiritually Numb
Spiritual numbness is not the same as spiritual death.
Listen to Today's Devotional
As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. โ Psalm 42:1โ2 (NIV)
What do you do when you feel nothing? When the worship music doesn't move you. When the Bible words feel flat. When prayer feels like talking to a ceiling. When you go through all the right motions and come out the other side feeling empty.
- The worship music doesn't move you
- The Bible words feel flat
- Prayer feels like talking to a ceiling
- You go through the motions and come out feeling empty
Numbness is often a sign that something has been depleted โ not that something has been destroyed.
Sometimes numbness comes from exhaustion โ you've been pouring out without being refilled. Sometimes from unprocessed pain: grief, disappointment, or disillusionment you've pushed down. And sometimes from a slow drift โ not a dramatic departure, but a gradual turning of your attention away from God, so gradually you didn't notice until you realized you couldn't feel Him anymore.
Exhaustion โ pouring out without being refilled
Unprocessed pain or disappointment
A slow, gradual drift over time
Burnout from spiritual striving
This psalm was not written from a place of fullness. The psalmist is thirsting. Longing. Not yet drinking. And he wrote it down โ he brought his longing to God as an act of worship. If you still wish you could feel close to God, you're not as far as you think.
Wait for feeling to return before you act
Act your way back to feeling
Over time the thirst becomes a drink
Show up. Open the Bible even when it feels dry.
Pray the words even when they feel empty.
Sit in His presence even when it feels like sitting in a quiet room.
He is still here. He hasn't moved.
Can you identify with the feeling of spiritual numbness? What do you think might have contributed to it? What small act of faith โ even without feeling โ could you take today?
God, I'll be honest โ I haven't felt You lately. My worship has felt hollow, my prayers mechanical. But somewhere underneath the numbness, there's still a thirst. I'm showing up today โ not because I feel it, but because I believe You're still here. Meet me in the dry place. Amen.
Do one spiritual act today โ not because you feel inspired, but as an act of faith. Show up. Let God meet you there.
