Daily Commentary

Today's Verse with Reflection & Application

Today's Scripture
"Behold, how great a love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!"
1 John 3:1 (WEB)

💭 Commentary

The word "lavished" here is crucial. This isn't a careful, measured gift. This isn't God reluctantly accepting you or tolerating you from a distance. He lavishes His love on you with reckless generosity and abundance. Like a parent who can't help but shower their child with affection, God pours out His love on you without holding back.

But the love comes with an identity transformation. You're not just forgiven or saved. You are called children of God. This isn't a nice metaphor or religious language. John emphasizes it twice: we should be called children of God, and then he adds for emphasis, "And that is what we are!" Right now. Today. This moment. Not someday when you get your act together. Not after you prove yourself worthy. You are God's child because of what Jesus did, not because of what you've achieved.

Think about what it means to be a child. Children belong. They're wanted. They have unlimited access to their Father. They bear the family name. They inherit everything the Father has. All of this is yours, not because you earned it, but because God lavished His love on you. When you feel overlooked, unworthy, or unloved today, come back to this truth: you are a beloved child of the Most High God. That's your identity. That's who you are.

🙏 Prayer

"Heavenly Father, thank You for lavishing Your love on me so extravagantly. Help me to truly believe and live in the reality that I am Your child, not because of my performance, but because of Your grace. When I feel unloved or unworthy, remind me of who I am in You. Let this truth transform how I see myself and how I treat others today. I am Your child. That changes everything. Amen."
